Fortinet Awarded Three Patents; Strengthens Intellectual Property Portfolio

Fortinet - the pioneer and leading provider of multi-threat security solutions, today announced that it has recently been awarded three new patents for networking inventions by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The patents strengthen Fortinet's IP and patent portfolio and provide the company with ownership of key innovations that ideally address the telecommunications carrier and service provider markets.

Fortinet has been granted U.S. patent number 7,096,383 for a system that enables virtual router failover in a network routing system; U.S. patent number 7,111,072 for a system for packet routing; and U.S. patent number 7,116,665 for methods and systems for supporting multiple customers via a distributed provider edge device. These inventions pertain to how Internet-based services and security can be implemented by carriers, or how managed service providers (MSPs) can deploy these services from a central device at a provider's network instead of at a customer site. In addition to these three new patents, Fortinet has more than 60 patents pending with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

"Carrier-based, or 'cloud-based,' delivery of virtualized security and other services has become the preferred method for most telcos and service providers because it allows them to efficiently scale their security service deployments and to do so more cost effectively," said Ken Xie, Fortinet founder, president and CEO. "These new patents both strengthen Fortinet's intellectual property portfolio and enable us to build upon our impressive success in the high-end market through the delivery of enhanced technology and services."

With a sharp focus on the high-end market, Fortinet is successfully addressing the needs of service providers - including telcos, mobile operators, and managed security service providers (MSSPs) - with its FortiGate™ family of multi-threat security systems. The strong demand for Fortinet's FortiGate-5000 Series -- the industry's only Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (ATCA)-compliant security systems -- has resulted in numerous sales wins around the world and helped Fortinet become the fastest-growing network security vendor in the high-end market (source: IDC, 2006).

Fortinet FortiGate systems deliver comprehensive network and content protection through the integration of eight essential security applications and services - including antivirus, firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention (IPS), anti-spam, anti-spyware, Web filtering and traffic shaping. The systems are kept up to date automatically by Fortinet's FortiGuard™ subscription services, which provide continuous updates to ensure protection against the latest viruses, worms, Trojans, and other threats - around the clock, and around the world. FortiGate multi-threat security systems, along with management solutions and highly differentiated reporting and logging, provide a reliable platform upon which to build a managed security service.
