MySQL 5.0: Upgrading and New Features

Training goals
This course is designed for Developers and Database Administrators who wish to migrate to MySQL 5.0. This course will prepare each student with the skills needed to utilize Stored Procedures, Triggers, Views, and the INFORMATION_SCHEMA metadata to enhance their productivity. Students will be exposed to the new storage engines, the ANSI SQL features and commands, the new status and configuration variables, the new precise math features and commands, and the new indexing and optimization features. In addition, this course will explain the MySQL recommended migration strategy.

At the completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Create database procedures and functions (including cursors), triggers and views.
  • Describe the new status and configuration variables.
  • Write SQL to retrieve information from the INFORMATION_SCHEMA database.
  • Understand how MySQL 5.0 performs more precise calculations independent of the operating system and gives greater control over handling and invalid values.
  • Describe the new storage engines available and improvement on pre-5.0 storage engines.
  • Explain the new “greedy” optimizer and index merge method.
  • Describe the SQL features and commands that are now available in MySQL 5.0.
  • Describe the MySQL recommended migration strategy.

Requirements

Students who wish to attend this course, should have attended the Using MySQL 4.1 or Managing MySQL 4.1 courses or be able to perform the following task:

  • Can state general facts about the MySQL privilege system.
  • Can view data in databases by using the MySQL SELECT Queries.
  • Can use MySQL functions in SELECT Queries.
  • Can create tables and explain column types in earlier versions of MySQL.
  • Can use JOINs in earlier versions of MySQL SELECT Queries.
