WiMAX and WiFi mesh convergence is underway

Proxim recently announced the launch of MeshMAX, an integrated WiFi and WiMAX device. MeshMAX provides WiMAX backhaul, WiFi mesh and WiFi user access, all in one box. The MeshMAX line supports licensed WiMAX frequencies in the 3.3 to 3.6 GHz bands and unlicensed frequencies in the 5.1 to 5.8 GHz bands for backhaul, as well as the unlicensed WiFi frequencies of 5.1 to 5.8 GHz and 2.4 GHz. Proxim claims to be first with an integrated unit like this, but others will likely follow with similar products shortly.

MeshMAX pulls together the right technologies, enabling a good fit with municipal wireless networks by satisfying connectivity needs of the millions of WiFi users and offering a high performance and standardized WiMAX backhaul. The product provides simpler and easier installation for municipalities and service providers because it avoids needing to implement separate mesh node and backhaul devices that are generally made by different companies. An integrated device like MeshMAX can also lead to lower hardware and installation costs.

No word yet on a municipality or service provider having made a decision to deploy a system based on MeshMAX in a big way, but I’m sure someone will move forward soon.
